Shrubs for Shade That Fill the Hard Spots

The shady side of a house and the ground beneath mature trees are the two places most landscapes give up on. They do not have to be. A whole group of shrubs evolved on the forest floor, under a canopy, and those plants bring flowers, berries and winter structure to exactly the spots where sun-lovers struggle. TN Nursery has grown shade shrubs in Tennessee since 1959.

Understanding Your Shade

Not all shade is the same, and the difference decides what will thrive. Part shade means roughly three to six hours of direct sun, often morning light with afternoon cover; most flowering shade shrubs bloom well here. Full shade means under three hours of direct sun, usually dappled light through a canopy; foliage shrubs and woodland natives belong here. Dry shade under a large tree is its own case, since tree roots take most of the available water, and it calls for the toughest, deepest-rooted choices.

Flowering Shrubs for Shade

Spicebush is one of the finest native shade shrubs, opening tiny yellow flowers in early spring before its leaves and hosting the spicebush swallowtail butterfly. Carolina allspice carries maroon flowers with a scent like ripe fruit. Witch hazel blooms yellow in late fall and winter, when nothing else is flowering. Hydrangea takes morning sun with afternoon shade and brings large summer flower heads. See more in flowering shrubs.

Shade Shrubs for Berries and Birds

Arrowwood viburnum and black haw viburnum both flower white in spring and set fruit that songbirds take through fall. Chokeberry holds its berries into winter, which matters when other food has run out. Winterberry holly drops its leaves and leaves bare branches crowded with red fruit. For a yard built around wildlife, see birding plants.

Evergreen Structure in Shade

Boxwood handles shade better than most evergreens and keeps a shaded bed from looking bare in winter. Paired with ferns and woodland perennials underneath, it gives a shady corner the same layered look a sunny border gets. Browse ferns and shade perennials to fill in beneath.

Planting Shrubs in Shade

Shade beds are often dry as well as dark, so water matters more than people expect. Soak new shrubs deeply once a week through the first full growing season, and again during any long dry stretch, even after they are established. Add two to three inches of mulch to hold moisture and feed the soil as it breaks down. Plant in fall or early spring while shrubs are dormant.

Shade Shrub Questions

What shrubs grow best in full shade?
Spicebush, witch hazel, Carolina allspice, the viburnums and boxwood all perform in low light. Native woodland shrubs are the most reliable group.

Which shade shrubs flower?
Spicebush and witch hazel flower on bare branches, Carolina allspice in late spring, hydrangea through summer, and viburnums in spring.

What can I plant under a tree?
Choose shrubs that handle dry shade and plant between surface roots rather than cutting them. Water deeply through the first two seasons while roots establish.

Do shade shrubs need less water?
No. Shade beds under trees are often drier than open ground because tree roots take the moisture first.

When is the best time to plant shade shrubs?
Fall through early spring, while dormant. Fall gives roots a full winter to settle in.
