Carolina Allspice , also called sweetshrub, is one of the best fragrant shrubs for the eastern US. Its maroon spring flowers smell like a mix of strawberry, pineapple and banana, and the scent is strongest on warm afternoons. Crush a leaf or a bit of bark, and you’ll smell spicy, clove-like notes too.
