I got my dormant Witch Hazel bare root plants in early May in zone 7a. Planted them up in pots and they are thriving. Can't wait to put them in the ground this fall and watch what they do this coming winter!

About this plant

Smooth Hazel Alder Details

Smooth Hazel Alder – Alnus serrulata

Smooth Hazel Alder is a durable native shrub that brings practical value and natural character to damp landscapes. Also known as Tag Alder or simply Smooth Alder, this deciduous species thrives beside creeks, ponds, wetlands, and other places where the soil remains consistently moist. Its spreading roots, dense branching, and ability to grow in challenging ground make it especially useful for restoration work, erosion control, wildlife plantings, and naturalized landscapes.

Smooth Hazel Alder Growing Information

Botanical name: Alnus serrulata

Plant type: Native deciduous shrub or small tree

USDA planting zones: 4–9

Mature height: 10–15 feet

Mature spread: 8–15 feet

Growth rate: Moderate

Sun requirements: Full sun or partial shade

Preferred soil: Moist to wet clay or loam

Soil pH: Acidic to neutral

Growth form: Multi-stemmed, upright, and spreading

Maintenance level: Low once established

Attractive Foliage and Natural Form

Smooth Hazel Alder develops several slender stems rather than one dominant trunk, creating a full and loosely rounded silhouette. The mature bark is smooth and grayish-brown, while younger twigs often have reddish-brown coloring.

Its oval green leaves have clearly defined veins and finely toothed margins. The undersides of the leaves are slightly lighter, giving the foliage additional depth when it moves in the wind. The shrub remains lush throughout spring and summer before taking on muted shades of yellow, orange, and brown during fall.

Drooping male catkins appear during late winter or early spring. Smaller reddish female flowers develop into woody, cone-shaped fruits containing tiny seeds. These miniature cone-like structures mature to dark brown and frequently remain attached after the growing season, adding texture to the winter landscape.

Ideal for Damp and Difficult Ground

This native plant performs best where moisture is naturally available. Stream edges, pond margins, low-lying fields, drainage channels, rain gardens, and seasonally flooded properties are all excellent locations.

Smooth Hazel Alder grows successfully in clay and loamy soil and tolerates compaction, heat, occasional flooding, and poor drainage. Although it appreciates full sun, it can also grow in partially shaded areas receiving several hours of direct light each day.

It is not the best selection for extremely dry or highly alkaline sites. For the healthiest growth, choose a location with acidic to neutral soil that stays moist throughout most of the year.

Uses in Landscaping and Restoration

Smooth Hazel Alder is an excellent choice for:

Wetland rehabilitation

Creek and riverbank plantings

Pond and lake edges

Stormwater management areas

Rain gardens and bioswales

Moist slopes requiring erosion control

Native wildlife gardens

Natural privacy borders

Conservation and reclamation projects

Large commercial or municipal landscapes

Its fibrous root system helps secure loose soil near waterways and reduces the movement of sediment. Because the plant naturally spreads and can form colonies, it is effective for filling open areas and creating long-lasting vegetative buffers.

When designing a formal landscape, allow adequate space for its mature width and remove unwanted suckers as needed. In restoration or naturalized settings, its spreading habit is usually an advantage because it creates dense cover with minimal intervention.

Supports Birds, Butterflies, and Small Wildlife

Smooth Hazel Alder contributes more than greenery to the landscape. Its branches provide shelter and nesting cover for songbirds, while the seeds are consumed by birds and small mammals. The foliage also serves as a host for the Harvester butterfly.

Planting this eastern North American native can help restore habitat near developed waterways and connect fragmented natural areas. It works particularly well when combined with other moisture-loving native trees, shrubs, grasses, and flowering perennials.

Cold Hardy and Easy to Maintain

Hardy throughout USDA Zones 4 through 9, Smooth Hazel Alder withstands cold winters as well as the heat and humidity found across much of the eastern and southern United States. Once its root system becomes established, the plant requires little routine care when grown in a suitably moist location.

Water newly installed plants regularly during their first growing season, particularly when rainfall is limited. A layer of mulch can help retain soil moisture, but it should be kept away from the stems. Pruning is generally unnecessary except to remove damaged branches, manage suckering, or shape plants used as informal screens.

A Practical Native Shrub With Lasting Benefits

Smooth Hazel Alder is an excellent investment for properties needing dependable vegetation in wet or erosion-prone areas. Its hardiness, wildlife value, attractive foliage, and soil-stabilizing growth make it a versatile option for restoration professionals, landscapers, municipalities, conservation groups, and property owners.

For the best results, plant Smooth Hazel Alder near water or in ground that stays consistently moist. Give it room to develop its natural multi-stemmed form, and it will provide years of functional beauty, habitat value, and reliable soil protection.
