Pinus Taeda - Loblolly Pine Seedlings Details

Loblolly Pine - Pinus Taeda

Loblolly Pine Seedlings, Pinus taeda, is particularly impressive and stands out as a quintessential representative of the southeastern forests of the United States. Stately yet graceful, airy yet strong, its richly russet, textured bark and straight trunk rising high into the sky make the loblolly a beloved tree and dependable species for a multitude of uses.

Loblolly Pine Seedlings are Used in Restoration and Lumber Production

Loblolly seedlings are an excellent choice for many purposes, in particular reforestation. Another common name for Pinus taeda is the oldfield pine because it is a pioneer in disturbed landscapes. Loblolly seedlings readily establish in old abandoned fields, clearcuts, and other openings. The seedlings can grow quickly, at 2–3 feet per year under favorable conditions, helping stabilize soils and reestablish valuable habitat.

Reaches Heights of 90+ Feet at Maturity

The loblolly can reach heights over 90 feet, with a canopy that opens with age, revealing an impressive length of attractive trunk below. Many a Southerner holds happy memories of walking through a loblolly grove, sporadic streams of dappled sunlight dancing on long-needled pathways below. The fallen needles of the loblolly create soft walking paths in parks and other recreational areas and can also be harvested as pine straw, a wonderful natural alternative to traditional wood-chip mulches. Loblolly seedlings should be protected from prolonged flooding and competition from other plant species in their early years, but once the trees establish roots and rise even slightly above their competition, their rapid growth can become a major advantage in establishing sites quickly.

Pinus Taeda Seedlings Thrive in Well-Drained Soil

The seedlings do best in moist, not continually wet, soils in full sun, but once mature can periodically tolerate wet soil. In the right conditions, and given a bit of space in the early years, land managers and property owners soon learn why this is not a tree people plant when they want to wait forever to see results. As for wildlife habitat and restoration, the loblolly pine provides food for more than 20 species of songbirds and shelter for many animals, including eagles and ospreys.

Wildlife Value

The loblolly is the host for the Imperial Moth and the Eastern Pine Elfin butterfly, and deer, squirrels, quail, rabbits, and wild turkeys seek out shelter in loblolly pine groves. Loblolly seedlings are ideal for woodland establishment, large-property plantings, windbreaks, soil stabilization, and disturbed-site restoration. The loblolly is a workhorse of the southeastern forest- stately, beautiful, adaptable, and a pioneer of open lands.

For generations, it has captured the hearts and imaginations of those who know the Southern forest, its towering silhouette a reminder that even the grandest forests begin with the smallest of seedlings.

Too early to tell

Shipment and delivery was prompt and accurate. But it is too early to know how the seedlings will do in the ground. Most had a good root structure, but several were nearly devoid of roots.
