Black Cohosh Plant Details

Black Cohosh Plant

The Black Cohosh Plant (Cimicifuga) is a beautiful perennial that will add an elegant touch of white to your garden. Bring structural interest and high drama to your garden with its delightful vertical flowers. In Spring, it is one of the first blooming perennials in the forest. It's perfect for shade gardens if you want something that is very exotic. "You can't go to big box retailers and get natives like these", states Tammy at TN Nursery.

When planted in landscaping or the garden, the black cohosh perennial offers tall, elegantly separated flower spikes that attract pollinators like hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. Its foliage adds lush texture to shady or woodland landscapes. It thrives in rich, moist soil and adds a touch of understated elegance when in bloom.

Landscape Uses and Maintenance

The Black Cohosh Plant (Actaea racemosa) is a native plant you will not regret planting in your garden. Related to buttercups, it fits into any woodland or pond-inspired garden and is great as an addition to the border or formal garden. Their white flowers on tall spikes are delicate and add a touch of whimsy to your garden. They appear to tower over the dark green leaves below.

The flowers are sweetly fragrant and pleasant to the nose, making them an interesting choice for a moon garden and a delight to walk by for both daytime and evening strolls. This plant will add much-needed height to your borders and can peek through other plants in your garden, creating layers.

Pollinator magnet! This plant blooms in the summertime and will attract butterflies and other pollinators, including hummingbirds, to your garden daily. Bees love the flowers. Birds will be attracted to the seeds later in the season.

Summer surprises abound! While most summer-blooming plants want full sun, plant in the shade for the best success with this plant. It prefers the shade over full sun. You can pair this plant with ferns, European ginger, and Asters for an intriguing and visually contrasting display. This is a low-maintenance plant that doesn't need regular watering. However, make sure to water if you notice the leaves beginning to yellow or get brown around the edges.

Noteworthy Characteristics of Cimicifuga Black Cohosh

The Black Cohosh Plant is the only host plant for the Appalachian Azure butterfly. It is also a host plant for other butterflies, including the Spring Azure and Holly Blue.

Attractive Blooms:

Black Cohosh features tight clusters of white flowers that bloom from late spring to early summer. The blossoms emit a sweet fragrance, adding charm to your garden.

Bush-Like Structure:

The plant grows in a bushy, hedge-like form, making it a substantial presence in the garden. Once established, it becomes a standout feature in shade or woodland areas.

Long-Lasting Flowers:

The blossoms can last for up to three weeks, with blooming times varying from June to September based on geographic location. This extended bloom period enhances garden interest.

Wildlife Value:

Black Cohosh is a magnet for pollinators, drawing bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds throughout its bloom period. It's also the host plant for the Appalachian Azure butterfly, making it a meaningful addition to a native or wildlife garden.

Good Purchase of Black Cohosh

One of my students is a horticultural architect who designs garden installations in first floor office building space and rooftop apartments in NYC and the surroundings. She uses black cohosh often in her work and recommended I incorporate it into my meditation garden as feature plantings. The specimens came with a suggestion they be soaked in water for a while to wake them up before planting them. I'm in zone 5B, northern Berkshires of MA, and these were 5B rated. I just put them in the ground (8), and will be watching with great anticipation next spring for growth.

Arrived on time and in very good condition. Literature was included on planting bare-rooted perennials and other plants. I planted them as soon as they arrived in one of my raised beds in a somewhat shady area. Would purchase again from TN nursery as they have a very good website with lots of information and I am very satisfied with the condition of the plants I received.

So glad to find this native perennial!

Typically I see snakeroot (black cohosh) in single pots which are very expensive. Using TN Nursery, I was able to afford and plant a quantity of these! Just planted so no results just yet, but the footings looked good.
