Ohio Native Plants for Midwest Landscapes
Ohio sits where the eastern woodlands meet the prairie, and its native plants reflect both. Oaks, maples and woodland wildflowers from the forested east; coneflowers, blazing star and prairie grasses from the open west. TN Nursery grows these natives on our Tennessee farm and ships them bare root throughout Ohio.

Growing Conditions Across Ohio
The state spans hardiness zones 5b through 6b, running colder in the northeast near the lake and milder along the Ohio River. Winters bring sustained cold and reliable snow cover; summers are warm and humid with decent rainfall. Soils vary widely, from the heavy clays left by glaciers across much of the state to richer loams in the river valleys. Native plants handle all of it because they developed here.
Native Trees for Ohio
Red oak, white oak and bur oak are the backbone species, long-lived and supporting an enormous range of insects and birds. Sugar maple delivers the orange and red fall color Ohio is known for and tolerates cold winters easily. Eastern redbud and white dogwood bring early spring flowers. Serviceberry flowers white in April and fruits in June for songbirds. See native trees.
Prairie and Woodland Perennials
For sunny beds, the prairie natives carry the season: purple coneflower, black-eyed Susan, blazing star, butterfly weed and goldenrod, blooming from June into October. For shade beneath trees, Virginia bluebell, trillium, mayapple, wild ginger and Christmas fern recreate the forest floor. Browse sun perennials and shade perennials.
Planting in Ohio
Plant in early spring after the ground thaws, or in fall roughly six weeks before hard freeze so roots settle before the ground locks up. Ohio's glacial clay holds water, so site plants where drainage is reasonable and dig wide rather than deep.
Leave perennial stems standing through winter. Seed heads feed finches and chickadees during the hardest months, and the hollow stems shelter native bees. Cut back in spring. See our planting instructions.
