Full Sun Shrubs for Color and Structure
Shrubs are the backbone of a landscape. They hold a bed together between the trees above and the perennials below, and in full sun they bloom harder and keep a tighter shape than they do in lower light. TN Nursery grows full sun shrubs on our Tennessee farm and ships them bare root, dug fresh during the planting season.

Flower buds take energy to make, and that energy comes from light. A shrub in six or more hours of direct sun sets far more bloom than the same shrub in four. Sun also keeps growth compact: light reaches the inner branches, so the plant fills in from the center rather than reaching outward. If you want a shrub that flowers heavily and holds its form, sun is the single biggest factor.
Flowering Shrubs for Full Sun
Crepe myrtle is the long-bloom champion in open sun, carrying ruffled clusters of red, pink, purple or white from July into September, then showing smooth peeling bark all winter. Forsythia opens bright yellow before almost anything else in spring. Spirea follows with pink summer clusters. Weigela sends out trumpet-shaped flowers in late spring that hummingbirds work steadily. Lilac brings the fragrance everyone remembers. Browse them all in flowering shrubs.
Shrubs for Structure and Screening
Boxwood takes full sun and clips into hedges, edging and formal shapes, staying green through winter. Viburnums grow into broad, dense shrubs with white spring flowers and berries that songbirds strip in fall. Burning bush turns brilliant red when the weather cools. For a living screen, see evergreens.
Planting and Caring for Sun Shrubs
Dig a hole twice as wide as the roots and set the shrub at the same depth it grew in the field. Backfill with native soil rather than amended mix so roots move outward into the surrounding ground. Water deeply once a week through the first growing season. Spread two to three inches of mulch, keeping it off the stems.
Prune flowering shrubs right after they bloom. Spring bloomers like forsythia and lilac set next year's buds in summer, so late pruning removes the flowers. Summer bloomers like crepe myrtle and spirea flower on new growth and can be shaped in late winter. See our planting instructions.
Full Sun Shrub Questions
What shrubs bloom longest in full sun?
Crepe myrtle, which flowers for roughly two months from midsummer. Spirea and weigela also carry a long season with light deadheading.
How much sun do flowering shrubs need?
At least six hours of direct light for heavy bloom. Less sun gives fewer flowers and looser growth.
What are the best evergreen shrubs for full sun?
Boxwood varieties, which hold color through winter and take shearing well for hedges and edging.
When should I plant shrubs?
Fall through early spring while shrubs are dormant. Fall planting lets roots grow all winter before spring growth begins.
How far apart should I space shrubs for a hedge?
Plant at roughly half the mature width so the shrubs grow together into a solid line. Check mature size on each product page.
