Red Daylily - Hemerocallis fulva
The Red Daylily (Hemerocallis fulva) is one of more than 60,000 cultivars of daylily, however it is known to be one of the more striking varieties to add to your garden. The genus name “Hemerocallis” means “beauty of the day” and as the name indicates, an individual flower only last for 16 to 24 hr. However, this ephemera is hardly noticed as it is common for more than 300 flowers to be produced by each plant per flowering season.
This daylily’s flowers are vibrant - their crimson petals are accented by a bright yellow center. On each petal, a central vein pulls yellow from the flower center to the petal tip as if swept by the stroke of a paint brush. Not only are the flowers divine when in bloomed, the antecedent buds add hints of orange and lime green to the backdrop of their swordlike, vibrant green foliage.

They are resilient and can even remain unplanted in a container for years, still producing beautiful blooms. Give the dazzling Red Daylily a try in your garden with the confidence of imminent success supporting you along the way.
Landscape Uses and Maintenance - Red Daylily
This perennial prefers soil that is moist but well-drained and rich in humus. While daylilies are tolerant of many environmental conditions, they do not like for the soil to dry out. Keep the soil moist during the hottest parts of the summer by adding a layer of mulch. This will also suppress weeds that may try to compete for resources in your flower bed.
Encourage flowering by remove spent flowers so that the plant does not put energy into producing seed pods. Once the leaves and flowers begin to wither in the autumn, cut the plants back to about 20 cm from the ground to encourage strong growth in the spring. Daylilies will only bloom in the second year after sowing, and also may delay flowering to the following year if planted by division, so be patient.
