Magnolia Jane Tree - Magnolia x 'Jane

The Magnolia Jane tree is a stunning and versatile addition to any landscape. It is known for its captivating beauty and hardiness. This deciduous tree is part of the Little Girl series, developed in the 1950s to create late-blooming and frost-resistant magnolias.

Key Features:

  • Blooms: The tree features striking, cup-shaped flowers with deep pink to purple on the outside and a lighter, rosy pink inside. The blooms emerge in early spring, often before the leaves, and continue sporadically throughout the summer.
  • Size and Shape: Reaching a mature height of 10-15 feet and a spread of 8-12 feet, this small to medium-sized tree has an upright, multi-stemmed growth habit, making it perfect for smaller gardens or as a focal point in larger landscapes.
  • Foliage: The tree has large, glossy green leaves that transition to a golden yellow in the fall, creating seasonal interest.
  • Hardiness: It is hardy in USDA zones 4-8, tolerating temperatures as low as -30°F. It is also resistant to pests and diseases, making it a low-maintenance choice for gardeners.
  • Care: It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from regular watering during prolonged dry periods.
  • Uses: Ideal as a specimen tree in borders or as part of a mixed shrubbery, it adds elegance and color throughout the growing season

Magnolia Jane Is a Spring and Summer Long Blooming Flowering Tree

Whether you're looking to enhance your garden with spring and summer blooms or seeking a hardy, easy-to-care-for tree, the tree is an excellent choice that offers year-round beauty and charm.

The Magnolia Jane Is a Floral Bouquet Tree

If you're looking for a tree that blooms throughout the spring and summer seasons, with the appearance of an elegant bouquet of fresh cut flowers and a delightful aroma reminiscent of French perfume with notes of lavender and fresh cut peonies, then this is the tree for you. We don't usually grow enough of these to advertise, but Tristan at TN Nursery saved 1000 of these to sell in the summer season.

The trees may grow to a height of 10 to 15 feet and may spread to 8 to 12 feet in width. Due to their small size, they are well suited for planting in small gardens or as accent trees in larger landscapes.

If treated right, the tree can live half a century or more. Trimming or pruning could also increase its life since this helps in disease control. This tree prefers full sun to partially shaded areas and grows best in slightly acidic soil. Since the plant has fine flowers, make sure that the area is protected from strong winds.

Jane magnolias are moderate growers, with an expected gain of 12 to 24 inches annually if grown under ideal environmental conditions. They have modest rates of growth; thus, they are easily developed without being aggressive.

In the early growing season, apply a slow-release balanced fertilizer of 10-10-10 on the lawn or any other area. Only feed the tree a little, as doing it in excess may cause a lot of damage to it or reduce flowering.

Care

Magnolia Jane Trees thrive in well-drained soil and benefit from regular watering, especially during dry periods. They should be pruned in late winter, mulch around the base for root protection, and fertilized in early spring for optimal growth.

Plant bare root trees during the dormant season in early spring or late fall (November through April). Dig the hole twice as wide as the roots so the soil is well-drained. Position the tree so the root flare is at or just above ground level. Fill the hole back with the soil you dug from and water. Maintain soil moisture, especially in the tree's early years, by providing deep, regular watering. Apply a 2-4 inch mulch away from the trunk at the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune trees during the first few seasons to establish strength and resilience, remove damaged branches, and continue maintenance pruning as the tree matures. Regularly inspect for pests and diseases and apply integrated pest management practices. Protect young trees from mechanical damage and extreme temperatures with tree guards, and stake them if necessary for support, removing the stakes after one or two years.
