Kwanzan Cherry Tree - Prunus Serrulata Kwanzan

The Kwanzan Cherry tree, also known as the Japanese flowering cherry, is famous for its stunning beauty and vibrant spring blooms. This ornamental tree is renowned for gardens, parks, and streetscapes because of its magnificent floral display and graceful form.

Key Features:

  • Blooms: The tree is famous for its stunning double blossoms, a vibrant, deep pink color. Every flower has 20-30 petals, giving it a whole appearance. These beautiful blooms usually appear in mid to late spring and typically last 2-3 weeks.
  • Size and Shape:This medium-sized tree usually grows to a height of 15-25 feet with a similar spread. Its upright, vase-shaped growth habit becomes more rounded as it matures, creating a stunning silhouette in the landscape.
  • Foliage: The tree's new leaves emerge as bronzy-red in spring, mature to a glossy green in summer, and turn brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and bronze in the fall, adding seasonal interest.
  • Hardiness: The tree suits USDA hardiness zones 5-9. It can adapt to various soil types but thrives in well-drained, loamy soil with total sun exposure.
  • Care: This tree needs regular watering to establish a robust root system, especially during dry periods. It should be pruned in late winter to early spring to maintain its shape and remove dead or damaged branches.
  • Uses: The tree is perfect as a specimen tree, for group plantings, or as an allele. It creates a dramatic display in any landscape and is a favorite for lining driveways and walkways or as a centerpiece in garden beds.

Kwanzan Cherry Trees Have Double Blooming Clusters of Pink Blossoms

The tree is excellent for adding vibrant spring color and year-round interest to your garden. Its stunning blossoms, appealing foliage, and graceful form make it a standout addition to any landscape.

What is the Best Fertilizer for a Kwanzan Cherry Tree

The trees grow well using slow-release fertilizer containing nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium at a ratio of 10:10:10 and put on the ground in early spring. It is also helpful to add organic compost into the surrounding soil to promote healthy growth and flowering as well.

Water the trees thoroughly once a week, more often if it is very dry. Small trees need to be watered frequently; established trees can withstand short spells of drought, but it is good to water them regularly.

Things such as the size and the necessity to have access to sunlight make the trees unsuitable for indoor cultivation. It's better to locate them outdoors, in an area that gets plenty of sun, so that they will develop properly and show off the flowers.

The tree has an expected longevity of 15-25 years. It does not have the longevity of many other types of trees, but its spectacular blooms in the spring make it ideal for use in planting ornamental trees.

Kwanzan cherry trees require well-draine soil that is fertile and full sun as well. This species is found in temperate environments and grows best where they are sheltered from the wind.

Plant bare root trees during the dormant season in early spring or late fall (November through April). Dig the hole twice as wide as the roots so the soil is well-drained. Position the tree so the root flare is at or just above ground level. Fill the hole back with the soil you dug from and water. Maintain soil moisture, especially in the tree's early years, by providing deep, regular watering. Apply a 2-4 inch mulch away from the trunk at the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune trees during the first few seasons to establish strength and resilience, remove damaged branches, and continue maintenance pruning as the tree matures. Regularly inspect for pests and diseases and apply integrated pest management practices. Protect young trees from mechanical damage and extreme temperatures with tree guards, and stake them if necessary for support, removing the stakes after one or two years.

Kwanzan Cherry Tree

I bought 2 kwanzan bare root cherry trees in late Summer of 2023 at the price of $39ea during the buy one get one free deal. A total of 4 trees were delivered to my home in Temecula, California in Nov., and they were all with robust and healthy roots. I immediately soaked the roots in water over night and then planted each tree in separate 12in nursery pots. I gave away 2 trees to my sisters for Christmas and the 2 dormant trees were transplant into the ground in early Jan 2024. By early March of this year, all 4 trees quickly sprouted leaves and multiple branches. In early July of this year, I finally was able to amend my heavy clay soil in my back yard flower bed and plant the remaining 2 potted kwanzan trees into the ground. Currently all 4 trees are thriving and doing well. I definitely recommend TN nursery to anyone who’s open to buying bare root trees. Great product with very fair and reasonable pricing.
