Larkspur (Delphinium) thrives in well-draining soil and requires regular watering to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Staking the plants to support tall stems and prevent flopping is essential. Additionally, removing spent flowers will encourage blooming. Finally, keep an eye out for pests like aphids.
Larkspur (Delphinium) thrives in full sun to partial shade. Provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and flowering. Some afternoon shade can also help shield the plant from excessive heat in hotter climates.

While I have not yet received my order I fear that there is not sufficient time to get the plants established prior to Bend Oregon's first frost / hard freeze. WHile I am confidant in the year guarantee, I do not want to loose the plants overwinter. Shawn

About this plant
Larkspur flower produces graceful spiky flowers that have earned it a place as one of the most impressive and beautiful native flowers in any garden and field‚ as well as in the wild․ It is a flowering herbaceous plant belonging to the family Ranunculaceae and occurs in shades from dark blue through pink to white․ The flowers‚ which often appear as a cascade of waterfalls built in ledges‚ are extraordinarily beautiful and catch the attention of gardeners and passers by alike․ They have a soothing effect when swaying slowly in the gentle winds․ They give the impression of new life and energy for their plants in the spring and summer when most plants are in their prime․
Its flowers have been prized in cultures all over the world․ According to one source‚ the flower spikes of the larkspur were said to be larks' feet‚ thus the name․ The plant had various folkloric meanings in Europe․ Strongly associated with gaiety and grace‚ it was included in celebratory bouquets․ In some areas it was considered a protector and decorated the interior and exterior of homes to ward off evil spirits․ There are many references to the flower in literature‚ and in art․ In modern times‚ the flower is used in literature and as a symbol in the arts for a wide variety of emotions and concepts‚ from love and fidelity to mystery and magic․
Additionally‚ larkspur plays an important role in the ecosystem in that it is a food source for different varieties of pollinators․ For larkspur‚ bees (particularly bumblebees) are a major source of pollination‚ and are drawn to the sweet nectar found in the base of the flower․ These flowers are visited by various pollinators including butterflies‚ which transfer pollen from one inflorescence to another․ Hummingbirds are frequent visitors that hover in and among the flowers to access the nectar․ A relevant point here is that native plant species‚ which are part of the natural habitat‚ are important to preserve․ Larkspur‚ which could be grown in gardens‚ beautifies the area‚ and provides a habitat for pollinators and other creatures‚ satisfying the delicate balance in the whole ecosystem‚ which requires interdependence․
Generally blooming from late spring to mid-summer‚ larkspur blooms boast a beautiful purple color‚ notably those of a deep violet hue․ The darker shades of blue and purple may be symbolic of the evening star or twilight. The colors of the flower also have individual meanings: Since they are visually pleasing‚ they are often used in bouquets and other floral arrangements to improve the appearance of an interior or exterior․
Larkspur is widely used‚ both as a flower and a plant‚ in landscaping‚ as an ornamental in borders‚ and as a height‚ color‚ and design element within various garden settings‚ providing each with effective and beautiful focal points and features‚ as well as attractive horticultural landscapes‚ for a variety of designs․ It grows well in almost any type of soil‚ and requires little maintenance‚ making it a good choice for specialists and casual gardeners alike․ It can be mixed in with daisies and other wildflowers to create the disorganized look of a wildflower meadow‚ or one or two specimens can be elevated on a pedestal to create a focal point․ The plants create movement as they sway in the wind‚ making sunny areas of the garden feel more alive and inviting․
In conclusion‚ the larkspur flower has a long history of human-helped cultivation‚ important roles in various cultural traditions as a symbol of distinction and admiration‚ and interactions with a range of pollinators․ It stands as an example of how a flower can represent both natural beauty and human intrigue in its language and cultural importance․ Its garden popularity‚ due to its attractive array of colors and its ability to flourish in a variety of landscaping situations‚ makes the larkspur another example of the importance of biodiversity and the need to protect and preserve such wonderful species for future generations to enjoy and study․ Each petal and bloom illustrate larkspur's stories of happiness‚ the fragility of existence‚ and the continuous cycle of life․
