The Slippery Elm is a beautiful native tree with a long history of use and appreciation in American landscapes. It is known for its graceful appearance, dependable nature, and ability to become a tree you can count on early in its life. Over time, it forms a wide, arching canopy that creates welcome shade and gives the property a mature, established feel. Its soft leaves and natural elegance make it a strong fit for both older homes and more modern yards.

Slippery Elm Trees Strong Growth and Adaptable Performance

This tree is a practical choice for a range of planting sites because it adjusts well to different soils and seasonal conditions. Its strong central trunk and flexible branches help it stand up to wind and shifting weather, while its root system anchors it securely. Once established, it grows steadily without constant attention. That makes it a solid option for homeowners who want a dependable shade tree without a high-maintenance routine.

Slippery Elm Tree Offers Shade, Character, and Lasting Value

As this tree matures, it develops a broad roof of foliage that provides cool shade during hot weather and adds depth to the landscape year after year. The leaves shift gently through the seasons, while the textured, ridged bark keeps the tree interesting even in colder months. It works well as a focal point or as part of a larger planting plan. One honest note: this tree is best suited for yards with room to let its canopy spread naturally.

If you want a native tree with heritage, beauty, and reliable shade, our Slippery Elm is a smart long-term planting for your landscape. We have been family-owned since 1959, and we grow trees with the practical quality gardeners count on.

How To Grow

How to Grow and Care for Bare Root Trees

Bare root trees are shipped dormant without soil, making them lightweight, cost-effective, and easy to plant during the cool months of early spring or fall. To begin, soak the roots in a bucket of water for 4–6 hours before planting to rehydrate them. Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil and ample space for the tree’s mature size.

Dig a hole twice as wide as the spread of the roots and deep enough to keep the root flare (where the roots begin to spread from the trunk) at or slightly above ground level. Create a small mound of soil in the center of the hole, spread the roots evenly over it, backfill with native soil, and gently tamp down to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting.

Keep the soil consistently moist (not soggy) during the first growing season, and apply mulch around the base—avoiding direct contact with the trunk—to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Stake the tree if necessary, and prune only to remove dead or damaged branches. With proper care, your bare root tree will establish quickly and grow strong for years to come.
