Ironweed - Vernonia
Ironweed enjoys the sun, and thrives in a well-drained to slightly wet garden soil. It's a perennial and though it likes full sun, it is quite versatile and will thrive on soils from gravel to clay, and will even grow dry once established.
How Do You Identify An Ironweed Plant
It has elongated, erect stems and heads of bright purple flowers that appear during late summer. Due to the brightly colored, large, feathery flower head with yellow rays and large green stem, it is easily noticeable in meadows or gardens.
What Is A Fun Fact About Ironweed
The name comes from its rigourous stems, which are hard and unbending, and thus difficult to bend or squash. What's more, it is full of beautiful flowers for butterflies and bees to pollinate plants.
It assists in supporting the local fauna, a source of food for birds as well as nectar to the pollinators. It is easy to care for and can make very tall and colorful additions to gardens.
Ironweed is not a demanding plant and depends mostly on the water in the soil, so it results in minimal watering only when there is a dry spell. The plant doesn't require much fertilization. Remove dead stems just before the onset of the growing season.
