The Foam Flower - Tiarella cordifolia

The Foam Flower (Tiarella cordifolia) is a perennial herbaceous plant that produces an elegant raceme of flowers. From a distance, these racemes look like tiny wands dipped in foam. Upon closer inspection, you will notice delicate, bright white, flowers that sparkle in the sunlight. These petite flowers house a bouquet of elegantly slender stamens that extend well past the edge petals, further adding to the appearance of a foamy-blur from a distance.

These plants are often found along the banks of streams and rivers. Their unique heart-shaped leaves and distinctly tall raceme with brilliant white flowers are unforgettable. Once you have seen them, you will notice them the next time you are on a spring time walk in the woods.

They are rhizomatous and emerge forth in early spring from root mats residing just before the soil surface. In mild winters, these plants will remain evergreen. Mature plants will spread via runners and over time they are known to create wide spreading colonies. They produce an enchanting ground cover with tiered collections of leaves that add a depth of texture unique to this perennial plant.

The Foam Flower’s heart-shaped leaves have 3-5 lobes that are pliable with a dry, paper-like texture to the touch. Some specimens may show a little flash of red variegation along the veins of the leaves, adding an extra pinch of color to your woodland garden landscape.

Landscape Uses and Maintenance - Foam Flower

These plants prefer moist but well-drained soils rich in humus and are great for naturalizing a woodland area. They are easy to grow and require little to no maintenance.

Plant these little beauties as a part of a woodland garden or in a moist area of the yard that experiences ample shade. They will bring a calm and serene ambience to the garden as their unassuming stature adds a ground level layer of foliage.

foam flowers

Have no idea at this time what they will be like since they were shipped as small roots with very little vegetation on them. Will have to wait and see if they come up in the spring.
