Black Walnut Tree

The black walnut tree is very popular because of its beautiful deep-brown to black bark and its vigorous growth habit. As it matures, it forms a round crown of branches and leaves as wide as a tall tree.

Black Walnut is a Towering Hardwood Tree that Lives For Centuries

This tree is well-suited to shading large landscapes alone or in stands. It will grow to approximately 50 to 75 feet high when fully grown, but very old trees have been known to reach 150 feet in height. Its drip line will spread 50 to 75 feet wide. Black walnut trees require full sunlight and are intolerant of shade. Juglans Nigra prefers well-drained, neutral soil. Consider planting stands of these trees to promote pollination and increase nut production.

Wildlife Loves This Towering Beauty For Its Edible Nuts

The black walnut tree drops large, green husks containing black walnuts in October after its leaves have fallen. The nuts attract wildlife such as squirrels, foxes, and woodpeckers, which makes it an ideal tree for your family of birdwatchers.

Planting a Black Walnut Tree - Juglans Nigra will provide sustainable harvests of nuts in the future

In addition to being a great shade tree, it has many practical uses. Its nuts can be harvested. The tangy, unique flavor of the nut is more pronounced than that of the English walnut, which contains twice the protein and stands out in chocolate confections.

The oil is a valuable gourmet condiment for those who love to cook. The shells can be used to make rich, brown organic dyes for cloth and wool. Older trees can be tapped for their sweet sap. Because of all its uses, this is an excellent tree for the homesteader.

Juglans Nigra creates a swath of shade

It is important to find the right companion plants for black walnut trees. This tree does discourage the growth of some plants beneath its drip line.

Perfect Companion Plants

Trilliums, hosta, cinnamon ferns, Spanish bluebells, and bellflowers will thrive beneath its shade. Black walnut trees are known for their longevity: The oldest Juglans Nigra on earth is 300 years old.

Care

Water Black Walnut trees deeply and infrequently to promote profound root growth. Mulch near the bottom to maintain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Prune during dormancy to remove dead or crossing branches and prevent disease.

Plant Reproduction icon

Plant Reproduction

Black Walnut spreads via fallen nuts and root sprouts.

Plant bare root trees during the dormant season in early spring or late fall (November through April). Dig the hole twice as wide as the roots so the soil is well-drained. Position the tree so the root flare is at or just above ground level. Fill the hole back with the soil you dug from and water. Maintain soil moisture, especially in the tree's early years, by providing deep, regular watering. Apply a 2-4 inch mulch away from the trunk at the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune trees during the first few seasons to establish strength and resilience, remove damaged branches, and continue maintenance pruning as the tree matures. Regularly inspect for pests and diseases and apply integrated pest management practices. Protect young trees from mechanical damage and extreme temperatures with tree guards, and stake them if necessary for support, removing the stakes after one or two years.

Will see if they sprout

Bought them. Nicely packed. Didn’t see the invite to make video, till after I ut plants in pots, since it was at the bottom of the box. We will see if they sprout. Bringing them to plant in ground in Maine. Article said if they do not blossom this year they will next year. This is doubtful since the roots probably have to grow below freeze line in Maine. Hope they do sprout this year and roots grow below 30 inches, Time will tell.
