Preventive Measures for a Healthy Perennial Garden: A Tennessee Grower's Guide
The best pest and disease prevention technique for your perennial garden is preventing the problem before it ever happens․ In Tennessee's humid climate‚ that means good air circulation‚ good soil quality‚ and good plant selection long before the problems start showing up on the leaves of your plants․ After mildew or aphids have established themselves within a bed‚ you are merely managing the damage․
This is what actually works after decades of growing perennials in the difficult conditions of a Zone 6b/7a climate with humidity and clay soil․
Start With Plants That Are Already Built to Resist Trouble
Not every perennial is equally vulnerable to disease‚ but two of the biggest problems in the Southeast‚ powdery mildew and root rot‚ are influenced by the types you choose to grow in the first place․
Native perennials have a real advantage here: because they've grown in the same rainfall‚ humidity‚ soil microbiome‚ etc․‚ for millennia‚ they shrug off many of the fungal diseases that trip up the non-native ornamentals․ In a Tennessee garden‚ coneflower‚ black-eyed Susan‚ and Joe Pye weed rarely need fungicide sprays because they've evolved with the native pathogens and pests․
Iris plants offer more than just a spring bloom‚ though․ They excrete natural insecticides to ward off some soil insects before they emerge in the spring․ These can be a good border plant for problems with grubs or nematodes in the bed․ Blue Flag Iris planted around the edges of bed plantings is a natural pest deterrent for these problems․
Give Every Plant Room to Breathe
This is the single most overlooked preventive measure‚ and it's free! Fungal spores need moisture and stagnant air to grow‚ and we can prevent both․ With perennials growing closely together‚ water sits on the leaf and does not evaporate as quickly after rain or watering‚ blocking airflow․
Solution? Use the mature spacing on the plant tag (rather than that which looks good at planting‚ when the plant is cramped in its nursery pot)․ A hosta that will spread to 24 inches wide needs the two feet today‚ even though that looks lonely on that scale․ From our experience the well-spaced gardens have much less mildew the second summer‚ when the plants are full size and the humidity is a big contributor to mildew․
Or if a well-established bed has become too crowded‚ fall is a good time to divide and thin perennials (most should be divided every 3 to 4 years)․ By September or October‚ the heat will have dissipated‚ but the plants will still have time to re-establish roots before cold weather․
Build Soil That Fights Back
Healthy soil can also affect disease resistance․ Perennials in poorly drained clay soil (widely found in Middle and West Tennessee) are under stress and may not be able to fight off disease as readily as those in healthier soil․
Incorporating 2 to 3 inches of compost by tilling into the top 6 to 8 inches of the soil prior to planting and top-dressing with compost (1 inch) in the spring each year will improve drainage (so roots are not sitting in water)‚ and improve nutrient content for the helpful soil microorganisms that help to control root-borne pathogens‚ such as Pythium and Phytophthora․
If your heavy clay soil stays wet for more than a few hours after a rain‚ raise your beds or incorporate expanded shale‚ readily available in many Tennessee counties‚ which will not break down in time like organic matter․
Water is absorbed at the root‚ not the leaf
Overhead watering with sprinklers or hoses set to sprayer mode‚ for example‚ is one of the fastest ways to spread fungal disease through a perennial bed because wet foliage with overnight moisture is a perfect atmosphere for powdery mildew‚ black spot, and botrytis․
Drip irrigation or a soaker hose are preferred․ If you must hand water‚ do it in the morning‚ leaving the rest of the day to dry off any splashes․ And never water on a schedule‚ but check the soil with your finger 2 inches down to see if it needs water․ Overwatering is as bad as under-watering‚ and encourages both fungus gnats‚ which breed in wet soil‚ and root-feeding insects and other pests․
Mulch Correctly‚ Not Just Generously
Mulching 2 to 3 inches deep discourages disease by guarding lower leaves from rain splash‚ regulating soil temperature‚ and preventing weeds that compete for moisture and nutrients with perennials and whose foliage can harbor insect populations that become pests of your plants․
The single biggest mistake most gardeners make is piling the mulch right to the crown or stem of the plant‚ where the rot begins․ Instead‚ keep mulch 2 or 3 inches away from the base of every perennial‚ so it resembles a donut‚ not a volcano․
Clean Up Promptly and Rotate When You Can
Any fallen leaves‚ the remains of flower stalks‚ or any leaves with a spot or discoloration should be promptly removed from the bed rather than left till the end of the season․ Fungal diseases over-winter in dead plant matter to reinfect the same area in the spring․ Walk through your beds once a week during the growing season for five minutes pulling out anything that looks off; this keeps most minor problems minor․
For perennials‚ dividing and replanting or moving them every few years breaks any soil-borne pests and pathogens that build up in the same place․ Crop rotation is especially important for plants that are vulnerable to root rot or nematodes․
Let Nature Help You
Ladybugs‚ lacewings‚ and parasitic wasps will do a far better job on aphids‚ caterpillars‚ and mites than any spray you can give them‚ so plant flowering perennials‚ such as yarrow or shasta daisy‚ within sight of your garden․ Avoid applying a wide-spectrum insecticidal spray because it will kill helpful insects too․
For crops that can be accessed‚ pick off large caterpillars or Japanese beetles and drop them in a cup of soapy water each morning․ Organic insecticides can be used like neem oil or insecticidal soap as a last resort every other evening‚ avoiding open flowers to minimize impact on pollinators․
Such a perennial garden requires less work each year and‚ once started‚ every hour spent in the first year pays a dividend season after season‚ as the plants become established․
